A Deeper Look into the Story, the Family, and the Legacy
The story of American Destiny doesn’t end with the final frame of the film — in many ways, that’s just the beginning.
We are proud to share that the American Destiny book is currently in the works — and it’s blossoming into something deeply personal and powerfully rich in detail. Co-authored by the Marcella Luiso and Phyllis Orlowski, this book opens the door to a world we only began to explore in the movie.
Marcella’s Memories: A Living Legacy
At the heart of this project is Marcella Luiso Flanagan, now 90 years old, who still remembers every moment of the Argenti family’s journey. And as we write, something beautiful is happening — the memories are coming back stronger than ever.
“It’s like the book is opening my mind,” Marcella says. “I’m remembering things I haven’t thought of in decades — and I can see them like they were yesterday.”
Every page of the book is shaped by her lived experience — a journey from Apulia in 1948 to New York City just four months later. The warmth, the struggle, the hope — it’s all there.
The Story You Didn’t See on Screen
While the film told a powerful story, there was so much more to say — and now we can. In the book, readers will:
Discover what really happened to Lilly and Phil
Go deeper into the lives of Filippo, Angela, Marcie, and the rest of the Argenti family
Experience new scenes and memories that didn’t fit in the movie
See how the family lived, worked, celebrated, and held onto their traditions
Authentic Recipes from Apulia
The book is also a love letter to Apulian food and tradition. Inside, you’ll find step-by-step instructions and stories behind:
Cartellate (cartadatte) — made for the feast of the Virgin
Biscotti di anice — twisted, boiled, then baked in the town forno
Nonna Marzia’s almond biscotti — a family favorite
Fig-filled pastries from Cassano delle Murge
Traditional focaccia — warm, rustic, and unforgettable
Homemade limoncello — crafted by hand with love and laughter
Photos, Sketches, and How to Build a Trullo
This isn’t just a cookbook or a memoir. It’s a visual journey:
Authentic family photographs — never before shared
Original sketches by Phyllis Orlowski — bringing scenes to life
A step-by-step guide on how to build your own trullo, the stone homes that dot the hills of Southern Italy
A Story for the World
Writing this book has felt like walking in the footsteps of our family — crossing oceans, facing the unknown, and holding fast to what matters most. It’s a story of origin, identity, and love.
We believe American Destiny — the book — will speak to readers around the world and will soon be translated into many languages.
This is more than a story. This is Marcella’s legacy — and she’s still living it, one beautiful memory at a time.
